Hypertension
- High blood pressure means that there is a higher-than-normal pressure in the artery. Blood pressure normally rises and falls throughout the day, but it can damage your heart and cause health problems if it stays high for a long time.
- High blood pressure (hypertension) can lead to many significant complications if left uncontrolled. Over time, high blood pressure can damage artery walls and promote the buildup of fatty plaque that can cause serious problems. Also, pumping blood against high blood pressure puts an extra burden on the heart which makes it thicken and enlarge like other muscles in our body.
- The higher your blood pressure levels, the more risk you have for other health problems, such as heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
- Hypertension affects 7.5 million Canadian and approximately 1.2 billion worldwide and is among the leading causes of death and disability worldwide.
Hypertension is a silent killer
High blood pressure is called a “silent killer” because most of the time high blood pressure has no obvious symptoms. Many people with high blood pressure do not even know they have it. Often the signs and symptoms are misunderstood.
